Nestled in a loop of the Rhône near its confluence with the Durance, Avignon is a city rich in history and the art de vivre. The imposing Palais des Papes, the truncated but elegant Pont Saint-Bénézet, the Musée Calvet and the Maison Jean Vilar are just a few of the must-see places in the City of the Popes. The Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) offer the opportunity to discover these places of culture and history in a different way. Here are some ideas for visits…
Exhibitions not to be missed
During Heritage Days, which will take place on September 17th and 18th, admission to all public and private museums is free. A few steps from the Hôtel de Cambis is the magnificent Hôtel de Caumont, which houses the Lambert Collection. A Dan Flavin retrospective is currently being held there, echoing the collaboration between Yvon Lambert and the American artist which began in the 1970s. For a complete change of tone, continue your walk to the Palais des Papes to admire an exhibition of the photographic works of Sebastião Salgado, devoted to the Amazon.
A trip to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon
To widen your field of discovery, we invite you to cross the two arms of the Rhône to reach the charming village of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, which faces the ramparts of Avignon. Amidst the picturesque streets and squares shaded by plane trees, you will find the Chapelle des Pénitents Gris. Dating from the 17th century, this religious building is a superb example of southern French Baroque. Finally, you can explore the imposing and remarkably well-preserved Fort Saint-André and its charterhouse.
With its architecture, history, contemporary art and Provençal way of life, Avignon is a wonderful place to explore during the Heritage Days. Stay at the Hôtel de Cambis in September and enjoy the pleasant mildness of the end of summer and the peaceful atmosphere of our charming small city.
